We are delighted to be able to present this hilarious and complex Alan Ayckbourn comedy which was first produced in 1984 and more recently a successful film starring Rob Brydon. As with much of Ayckbourn's work the comedy still works as it is rooted in base human instincts. There is a large cast containing both highly experienced and new to the Guilsfield stage talent.
This is about the complex shenanigans and misbehaviour, on and off stage, of the cast of an Amateur operatic group staging "The Beggar's Opera" . It contains all those amateur theatre "types" but in exagerated form.
A diffident widower attempts to escape loneliness by joining the local light operatic society. By accident rather than by design (in fact, by not saying "no" to anything be it a request to obtain confidential information from his company to an offer of illicit sex) he advances from a small part to the lead. Parallels are drawn with the Beggars Opera being staged and the day to day activity of the society and it's intrigues and peculiarities.
